Online Learning Series on Gender Equality for the Cultural and Creative Sectors
The “Gender Equality” Online Learning Series provides knowledge, methodologies and practical tools to promote and strengthen gender equality in the cultural and creative sectors.
Developed within the framework of the CultureCIVIC: Capacity Building and Networking Programme, the Online Learning Series is now available online. The series aims to contribute to strengthening awareness, knowledge and capacities on gender equality in the cultural and creative sectors by bringing together theoretical frameworks, recent research, examples from the cultural and artistic fields, and practical case studies.
Comprising five modules and six sections, the series has been developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr Beril Türkoğlu and Dr Burcu Asena Salman and presented with English subtitles. Starting with the fundamental concepts related to gender equality, it explores ways in which a gender-responsive approach can be incorporated into cultural production and project development processes.
The first module addresses gender equality and its implications for the cultural and artistic sectors, while the second focuses on the gendered dimensions of labour in cultural production. The third module examines approaches, methods and tools for the mainstreaming of gender equality in the cultural and artistic sectors. The fourth module focuses on the role of communication, language, visual narratives and media practices in the reproduction and reinforcement of gender stereotypes.
The final two sections of the series, “Case Studies: Structural Analysis” and “Case Studies: Reflections of Gender Inequalities in Popular Culture”, build on the concepts introduced in the previous modules and examine them through concrete examples. Alongside the analysis of cultural and artistic projects from a gender perspective, television series and other forms of visual storytelling are examined through the Bechdel Test and other approaches to representation analysis.
The series goes beyond addressing gender equality as a theoretical framework and provides practical tools that can be integrated into the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation stages of cultural and artistic projects. Key areas such as needs assessment, the collection and use of sex-disaggregated data, the establishment of inclusive teams, equal representation, fair remuneration and impact assessment are explored through practical examples.
Bringing together theoretical frameworks with practical knowledge, methodologies and tools, the learning series is open to cultural and arts professionals, civil society practitioners, project managers, communication specialists, students, and anyone interested in strengthening their knowledge of gender equality in cultural production processes. Participants who complete all sections of the learning series and submit the feedback survey at the end of the training will be awarded a certificate.
CultureCIVIC’s online learning offer will extend beyond gender equality. In the coming period, the series will be expanded with new learning content addressing environmental sustainability and diversity/inclusion. Through these additional thematic areas, CultureCIVIC aims to further diversify accessible learning resources that support individuals and organisations active in the cultural and creative sectors in strengthening their knowledge and capacities in relation to current global challenges and shared values.
