Dîwan: Space, Place, Community

December 2025 - November 2026
BATMAN

The objective of the project is to enhance the technical and spatial infrastructure of Diwan, a cultural institution in Batman that offers education in Kurdish art and theatre. As part of the project, the stage lighting, sound and projection systems will be upgraded; training areas will be developed with equipment suitable for children and young people. Thanks to these improvements, Diwan will continue its activities throughout the year, reaching more artists, children, and young people. Furthermore, accessibility to the stage, foyer, and classrooms will be improved, whereas the number of events and audience capacity will increase, thereby strengthening the organization’s financial sustainability. The project will support cultural production, mother tongue-based education, and social participation in Batman on a permanent basis while preserving the organization’s volunteer-based structure.

The structural improvements to be carried out as part of the project can be summed up under the categories of technical infrastructure, facilities for education and the audience, and equipment for the space itself. Thanks to these improvements, arts education for children and young people will become more accessible and sustainable. (1) The capacity for mother tongue-based art activities will increase, (2) the improved spaces will provide safe places for social and cultural gatherings, (3) eliminating technical equipment shortages will transform the space to be suitable for use by a greater number of artists and groups, and (4) increased revenue will strengthen the participation of disadvantaged children and young people. In this way, Diwan will become an inclusive centre that supports cultural heritage preservation.

Şermola Performans & Dîwan Academy

The story of Dîwan began with Şermola Performans, founded in Istanbul in 2008. However, in 2016 we were forced to close our Istanbul venue. This led us to evolve into a multi-centred theatre initiative with branches in Germany and Istanbul. During the pandemic, whilst we were providing online courses on theatre history in 2019-2020, the work carried out by participants from Batman became a continuous feature, and this journey evolved into Dîwan Academy in 2023.

Dîwan Academy is an independent cultural institution that supports artistic endeavours in the mother tongue through art education, cultural production, and international collaborations. Based in Batman, the academy organises programmes in theatre, the performing arts, music and dance in the mother tongue, thereby providing an accessible arts environment for children, young people and adults. By fostering cultural diversity through international and local partnerships, Diwan Academy believes that art is a tool of resistance that strengthens social solidarity.
