Şaneşin Performance
The project aims to strengthen the technical infrastructure of Mardin’s first private Kurdish-language theatre venue. For the past five years, the community has been staging Kurdish-language plays for children and adults with a team of volunteers, while also organising film screenings and hosting arts groups from various cities. As part of the project, stage lighting, sound, and stage equipment will be upgraded to enhance the technical quality of the performances, improve the audience experience, and transform the venue into a more functional centre for multi-purpose cultural events.
Şaneşin Performance Theatre Group
Şaneşin Performance is a volunteer theatre group based in Mardin that stages plays in Kurdish for both children and adults. Active for five years, it has been the city’s first private theatre for the past three. Its founding aim is to increase the visibility of the Kurdish language in public space by producing high-quality theatre in Kurdish, to bring local cultural memory to the stage, and to create accessible theatre for all. Its principles are volunteering and collective production. The group’s mission is to transform Kurdish theatre into a sustainable artistic production space. The venue provides a platform for producing original plays for both children and adults, while also hosting film screenings, concerts, and events by groups from different cities. In this way, it contributes to the development of cultural life in Mardin. Acting as both a producer and a host, the collective functions as a multifaceted cultural centre. A team of around fifteen volunteers ensures the theatre’s sustainability through their own resources, taking on roles in artistic direction, acting, technical work, programming, and communications. Sustaining its activities through audience support and limited internal resources, the collective also offers performance opportunities to other artists and groups in the city.
