MISSED LIVES – DOMS

Rights-Based Visibility Through Documentary and Exhibition Activities

The “Missed Lives – Doms” project, implemented by Mehmet Kuyumcu under the Grassroots Projects Grants, encompasses activities aimed at increasing the visibility of Dom, Abdal, and Roma communities after the earthquake of 2023. In 2024, it aimed to create a common ground for discussion among different communities through screenings of the documentary “Missed Lives,” which shows the human rights violations and discrimination faced by Dom communities in Hatay after the earthquake, and through a photo exhibitions. The exhibition, documentary screenings, and discussions held in Hatay brought together local NGOs, academics, and community representatives; national visibility was achieved through events held in venues such as the Karşı Art Studies Center and the İBB Beyoğlu Cinema in Istanbul. The documentary also won the Best Film Award at the AH HE DIKHA International Roma Film Festival and was screened internationally at the Second World Summit for Social Development. Through media work and civil society collaborations, the project brought the human rights violations experienced by the target communities to public attention in a multifaceted way; Advocacy activities continued with screenings in Ankara.
