Mek Mezi Culture and Art Meetings

August - November 2023
ARTVİN

Mek Mezi, which means "Just Us" in Hemşin language, calls the society to unite, to get to know and meet each other, and stand in solidarity. The meetings construct a critical attitude towards the uniform understanding of culture and art imposed by popular culture, and point out the important role of cultural and artistic production in the native languages in transmitting a language and culture to the future. In this project, one of the reflexes that will show strong resistance against the assimilation of Hemşin language and culture in order to transfer and keep alive the language and culture to the future is seen as 'increasing and disseminating Hemşin cultural and artistic productions'. In this context, two main activities are planned and they will lead to increasing cultural and artistic production in Hemşin. The first of these is workshops for conversations where experiences will lead to musical productions in Hemşin. The second is the acoustic concert activities to be held in the Makriyali Church, a place of cultural memory in the Makriyali geography, which is concerned with the importance of introducing cultural and artistic productions that are left outside of popular culture in the Hemşin society to general society. These concerts will indicate an effort of a collective procedure that is close to cultural ceremonies, sincere and integrated with society.
